DOMINION LAND SURVEY
Alberta’s Township System and what it means to you, the Landowner
Prior to Western Canada being settled, starting in 1871, the West was surveyed and divided up so that settlement of the west could be controlled and orderly. This system of identifying land is known as the Dominion Land Survey (DLS). The resulting pattern of settlement and land use has become an integral part of living on the prairies. After Manitoba and the Northwest Territories became part of Canada, it became obvious to the government at the time that a system would be required to provide land to settlers on the approximately 300,000 square miles (800,000 square kilometres) of land that was available in the West.
