With the project completed there have been nearly 1,200 kilometres of High Density Polyethylene pipe installed to distribute water throughout the County.  This pipe ranges in size from 40mm up to 150mm and is rated for pressure anywhere from 160 PSI to 200 PSI.  All pipe installed has been buried to a minimum depth of 2.1 metres to prevent freezing over the winter months.

There are two main methods of installation that have been approved for the County of Newell Water Project. The first is the plowing installation method. For this method, a Cat is equipped with a ripping shank behind it to cut a trench in the ground to a minimum depth of 2.1 metres. The pipe to be installed is then laid alongside the desired alignment and fed down behind the shank. The Plow Cat is then usually hooked up to a number of Tow Cats which help the Plow Cat rip a trench in the ground to the desired depth. In certain situations a hoe with a ripper attachment will pre-rip the alignment to allow easier operation of the Cats. The benefits of the plowing method are the speed to install pipe, and the minimal disturbance that is caused.
The second method of installation that has been approved is horizontal directional drilling. This method is used mainly for crossing roads, pipelines, canals and railroads. In this method a drilling unit will set up where the installation alignment starts. It will then sink the head of the drill into the ground and begin extending by adding multiple drill stems. The drill head cuts through the ground with high pressure water, and the location of the drill head is tracked from ground level using the remote location sensor. Once the drill head reaches its destination it breaks through the ground. At this time the drill head is removed and a reverse reaming bit is attached, as well as the pipe to be installed. The rods are then pulled back through the existing hole, followed by the reaming bit and the pipe. The benefit of this installation method is that there is absolutely no disturbance except where the contractor must dig catch holes to fuse pipe together. Using this installation method, anywhere between 300 and 400 metres of pipe can be installed in a single drill shot.
