Fire & Emergency Services

Dial 9-1-1 for Fire, Police, Ambulance (Emergencies Only)

When is it appropriate to dial 9-1-1?
  • When there is Fire or Smoke
  • When you are witnessing a crime
  • When you have a medical emergency
If English is not your first language tell the 9-1-1 operator. They have access to over 150 languages. Be prepared to answer all the questions asked, this does not delay the call as a second Dispatcher will be alerting the required responders.

Know your Rural Address or Municipal Address. Write it down so you do not have to try to remember it during an emergency. If calling from another location, know which road or location the emergency is located on. Use landmarks if possible. Over half of emergency calls coming into the 9-1-1 centers are from cell phones.

Calls originating from the County of Newell to 9-1-1 will go into the Red Deer Fire 9-1-1 Centre. If the call is for a fire they will handle all aspects of the call. If the call is for Police the call will be immediately transferred to the RCMP Dispatch Centre in Red Deer. If the call is for an Ambulance the call will be immediately transferred to Calgary EMS Dispatch Centre. If you need more than one service tell the first operator that.
