EID/County Partnership on Drainage

The County of Newell in partnership with the Eastern Irrigation District have been improving drainage throughout the County since 2010. The partnership is a collaborative approach for both organizations, which serve basically the same rate payers, to improve the drainage networks throughout the region. Drainage networks are assessed and rated to establish priority for rehabilitation.

Two (2) components of the drainage improvements are Major Drainage Courses, consisting of receiving basins and major drains, and Minor Drainage Courses, consisting of roadside ditches. To accomplish our objectives, both organizations have agreed to contribute $1.5 Million dollars for improvements, annually. All engineering and construction is administered by the EID. The County administers land acquisition and working space, as well as working with third party utilities in relocations.

To date, the Partnership has provided improvements in:

  • Cassils (2012 - 15 km's)
  • Rolling Hills (2012 - 36.8 km's)
  • Scandia (2013 & 2014 - 33 km's)
  • Rainier (2015 & 2016 & 2017 – 70 km’s)
  • Millicent (2016 & 2017 – 12 km’s)

For 2017, efforts will be focused on completing the in progress works in Millicent as well as Rainier. Preliminary planning has started on two phases, one south of Rainier and one north, where construction is expected to start in the spring of 2018. These two projects will consist of 70 kilometres of ditch rehabilitation.
