Effective June 11, 2026, the Access to Information Act (ATIA) and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) replaced the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP). These Acts establish a framework that balances the public's right to access information held by public bodies with the protection of personal privacy. The legislation applies to public sector organizations throughout Alberta, including municipalities such as the County of Newell. 

Key features of POPA: 

  • This legislation outlines how the County of Newell is permitted to collect, use, and share your personal information

  • There are specific conditions under which non-personal information can be generated, used, or shared by public bodies

  • If you believe your personal information was collected, used, or shared improperly, you have the option to file a privacy complaint

  • You are entitled to request access to records maintained by the County of Newell, though exceptions may apply

  • You have the right to view any personal information the County of Newel holds about you
