Emergency Preparedness Week 2025: Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.
From May 4–10, 2025, Canadians across the country are marking Emergency Preparedness Week — a time to raise awareness and take action so you and your loved ones are ready when emergencies happen.
This year’s theme is “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.” It’s a reminder that disasters don’t wait. Whether it’s a wildfire, power outage, or extreme weather, we all have a role to play in protecting ourselves and those around us. Across Alberta, the most common risks include:
- Power and water outages
- Extreme heat
- Drought
- Extreme cold
- Wildfires
By taking a few simple steps now, you can reduce the impact of emergencies later:
- Know the risks in your area. Visit GetPrepared.ca to learn more about the hazards that could affect your region.
- Make an emergency plan. It only takes about 20 minutes — but it could make all the difference in a crisis.
- Build a 72-hour emergency kit. Include food, water, medications, important documents, and supplies for pets.
- Connect with your community. Emergencies are easier to navigate when you know your neighbours.
- Stay informed. Sign up for emergency alerts and follow trusted sources of information.
