The Power of Pollinators in the County of Newell
The Power of Pollinators in the County of Newell
Celebrating Pollinator Week: June 16–22
Pollinators may be small, but their impact is enormous. Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, beetles, and even some flies play a vital role in sustaining our ecosystems and agriculture, especially here in the County of Newell.
Pollination is the process by which pollen is transferred from one flower to another, enabling plants to produce fruits, seeds, and new plants. Over 75% of flowering plants and more than one-third of the world’s food crops rely on pollinators. Without them, we would see fewer fruits, vegetables, nuts, and wildflowers.
In our region, native bees are particularly important. With over 800 species of wild bees in Canada, many of which nest underground or in dead wood, these hardworking insects quietly support biodiversity and food production. Unlike honeybees, which were introduced from Europe, native bees are uniquely adapted to local plants and often more efficient pollinators.
Pollinators also benefit the landscape. Their work boosts the health of native plant populations, which in turn provide habitat and food for other wildlife. In natural areas, gardens, and even farmland, these creatures help maintain the balance of life.
Unfortunately, pollinators are facing serious threats. Habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, and disease are all contributing to declines in pollinator populations. But the good news is that anyone can help, right at home.
How Can YOU Support Pollinators?
- Plant native species like wild bergamot, prairie coneflower, goldenrod, and milkweed.
- Provide water—shallow dishes with stones or pebbles help pollinators safely hydrate.
- Leave some “mess”—bare soil, dead wood, and leaf litter offer vital nesting sites.
- Avoid pesticide use, especially during bloom times.
- Plant continuously blooming flowers from early spring to fall to provide year-round food.
During Pollinator Week and beyond, take a moment to notice the bees buzzing on blossoms or a butterfly fluttering past. These tiny workers are doing mighty things for farms, flowers, and our future.
Are YOU Up for a Challenge?
For the month of June, the County of Newell has been working in collaboration with EcoBrooks to educate and raise awareness around the vital importance of pollinators. We’re running a contest on our social media channels, submit as many photos as you want through the FREE Newell Connect app or via our website to the #myCountyofNewellPhoto Challenge. Those photos are being shared regularly throughout the month of June. The photo with the most “likes” by July 6 will WIN a Pollinator Basket courtesy of EcoBrooks!
You still have time to submit and “like” as many June photos as you want.
Follow EcoBrooks and stay caught up with our region’s environmental sustainability and eco-friendly efforts.
