Position Objectives:
The County of Newell Agricultural Services Department is now accepting applications to join our team as an Agricultural Technician. Under the general direction of the Manager of Parks and Facilities, this full-time permanent position is responsible for supporting the delivery and implementation of Agricultural Services programs and operational activities, including vegetation management, roadside programs, facility and infrastructure maintenance, and shop operations. The position also supports legislative compliance activities under applicable provincial legislation, including the Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, and the Soil Conservation Act.
Duties include the following:
- Participate in the implementation of approved Agricultural Services programs (i.e., Roadside Weed Control, Noxious Weed Control, Roadside Seeding), and related vegetation management initiatives.
- Operate and maintain assigned equipment, tools, and machinery such as sprayers, tractors, mowers, trucks, truck-trailer units, and other agricultural and maintenance equipment.
- Support facility maintenance and landscaping activities, including irrigation system operation and repairs, grounds maintenance, tree planting and trimming, and vegetation control.
- Assist with shop operations (i.e., rental equipment program, equipment preparation, equipment delivery and pickup) and maintain a clean and organized facility.
- Promote and model safe work practices and complete required documentation.
Due to the nature and diversity of the duties, applicants must be conscientious persons who are self-starters and able to work under minimal supervision. Some heavy lifting may be required, and additional duties may be assigned as the need arises.
Preference will be given to applicants possessing:
- Experience in agricultural operations, vegetation management, facility maintenance, or a related field.
- Experience operating agricultural equipment, tractors, sprayers, and trailers.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and experience in equipment maintenance.
- Experience in HVAC, welding, carpentry, or facility maintenance is considered an asset.
- A valid Intermediate First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain.
- A valid Alberta driver’s licence.
- A valid Alberta Pesticide Applicator Licence.
- A current driver’s abstract.
A pre-employment drug and alcohol screen and an occupational health assessment for new and returning employees is required as per County policy. The successful candidate is required to provide a clear criminal record check prior to employment.
